Knotted Jar DIY // 2 Variations // Easy Macrame Knots

knotted jar

Hey guys! Welcome back to my blog! I’m so glad to have you here! Today I wanna show you how to make a knotted hanging jar. I also made another one that you can display it on a tray or a shelf. Both look amazing and they are very easy to make! All you have to do is to make some knots!

So, let’s begin!

Hanging Knotted Jar

For the hanging knotted jar you will need:

Supplies

  • jute rope
  • a jar
  • a pair of scissors
  • a wooden ring
  • a measuring tape

First, measure the height and the length of your jar and multiply it by 8.

Cut 4 strands of the rope and pass them through the ring until you reach the center of the ropes.

Then, you have to make a gathering knot by taking another piece of rope that’s about 2 feet and you have to place the one end of the rope just below the wooden ring.

Hold it in place with your thumb and create a loop a couple of inches down and then wrap it around all of the cords tightly. The number of times that you wrap it depends on your own preference.

Once you’re done wrapping, take the end you were working with and pass it through the loop.

Then take the other end of the rope and pull it up. That way the loop will disappear under the coil.

Lastly, trim off the excess cords.

Next, you’re gonna need to separate four sections of two ropes each.

Take one section and make a knot about 15″ down of the wooden ring, like I did or you can do it as far down or up as you like. Then take another section and make a knot at the same height as the previous one you made. You have to create four knots in total, all at the same point.

Next, tie a knot by taking two strands of each neighboring knot. Be careful, to make the knots at the same height because that way they will be evenly spaced and your jar will look more like “I bought it from a store” kind of jar.

Then repeat that sequence and create more rows of knots until you reach the bottom of the jar. You can insert your jar now and then to see where you should stop knotting.

When you’ll finish with the knotting, place your jar inside and hold the strands together to determine where you should do the final gathering knot.

Then make your final gahering knot as I saw you earlier.

Afterward, make your final cut to the strands and you’re done!

Knotted Jar

For the knotted jar you will need:

Supplies

  • a jar
  • jute rope
  • a pair of scissors
  • a measuring tape

Start by turning your jar upside down and measure the length of the jar from the one end to the other and multiply it by 4.

Then cut 8 strands of the rope and put them aside.

Next, cut a piece of rope and wrap it around to the top of the jar two times and make a knot.

Then pull it out and take one of the eight ropes that you put aside earlier and attach it to the rounded piece by folding the rope in half, place the loop that was created under and pass the strings through the loop and pull them down. And you’ll repeat this step until you will attach all the eight strings.

In order to place them evenly I placed the first 4 strings across to each other and the other 4 between them.

When you’re done with the piece you were working with, place it on top of the jar. Pull the strings to tighten them and begin tying knots as we did previously with the hanging one. You’re gonna need to take two strings that are close to each other and make a knot. And you have to make rows of knots until you reach the bottom of the jar.

When you’ll reach the bottom, take another piece of jute rope and weave it around the last knots. This will be your anchor piece that will hold all of the strings together.

When you’re done with the weaving, take the ends of the rope you were working with, pull them tight, and secure them by making a tight knot. Finish it by trimming off all of the excess ropes with a pair of scissors and here is your finished product!
